Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vocal Latitudes?

Vocal Latitudes is a three-year-old, mixed voice, community choir in Calgary singing all styles of vocal music. Most (but not all) of the repertoire is sung a capella (unaccompanied by instruments). Repertoire ranges from gospel, to folk, jazz, pop, classical and world music.

Do I have to audition? Is choral experience necessary?

No, auditions are not required. You do not have to be able to read music. However, you should be able to learn parts, match pitch and blend with a section while singing harmonies. Choral experience is not necessary. (But it doesn't hurt)

When are rehearsals?

The choir rehearses each Tuesday evening at the Unitarian Church of Calgary from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. The church is at 1703 First Street NW. (Rehearsals are often followed by a trip to the pub).

We are also planning to have some sectional rehearsals outside of regular rehearsal times this year.

Does the group perform?

Yes, performances are important.  In addition to our self-produced concerts in December and May, last year Vocal Latitudes performed at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, at political events, for the Unitarian Church and at drop-in shelters. We are always looking for new places to perform.

A unique feature of our performances is that we also form smaller ensembles (quartets, solos, duos) to perform vocal numbers.  This is done on the initiative of choir members and rehearsal for these ensembles is usually outside full choir rehearsal times.

Is there a social component to choir membership?

Yes, it’s not all rehearsing. A couple of times per term we stop the rehearsal early and have a snack and chat social, and there’s always a party after a performance.

 What does it cost?

The cost is $75 for the fall term (14 weeks approximately) and $95 for the spring term (approximately 18 weeks). Fees cover rehearsal space rental, director's honorarium, rehearsal pianist and music costs.

In the case of financial hardship, the fees can be waived either partially or in whole. See choir administrator Rick Sept.

How is the choir's named spelled? I've seen different versions of the name.

It’s Vocal Latitudes, really, though when we named the choir we used VocaLatitudes (and you'll see that spelling on the website, until it gets updated). We've found the two spellings confusing, and we're dropping the original spelling.
